Science Unit: Human Body

This blog is meant for parents so students do not hesitate to show your parents this video. We are starting a new Science unit about the Human Body. What we put INTO our bodies will directly effect how our body develops. This video warns and educates people about the importance of FOOD.

Practice Math Facts

Everyone has been learning very well in my math class. Seems like everyone understands Problability and Percentage. I'm very proud.

As you know in class we have been doing Minute Math where you answer as many Addition, Subtration, Multiplication and Division questions as fast as you can in 60 seconds. It is important to know your Math Facts like it's your best friend because when we start learning harder concepts you DO NOT want to be wasting your time on the Basic Math Facts or getting Basic Math Facts wrong then having the FINAL answer wrong.

Practicing Math Facts can also be fun. Check out this AWESOME site where you can play games to practice Math Facts. The best thing about this site is... YOU CAN PLAY AGAINST OTHER PEOPLE

Here are some of my favourite games on the site.

Field Trip To the Zoo

This is a REMINDER we have our Zoo Field Trip coming in about a week from now, May 11, 2011. If you have not given your parents the Permission Form bring that to me ASAP! Better yet, go RIGHT NOW and ask your parents or guardian to sign it for you and put it in your bag RIGHT AWAY. I have said this many times, without the Permission Form you can not join us on our field trip... believe me you do NOT want to miss it.

Toronto Metro Zoo:
Grade 4-8 Endangered Species

During the Field Trip you will have to:
- draw 5 Endangered Animals
- describe the Animal and its Habitat
- why is this Animal on the Endangered List?

You will get more information in class. That's TheLawDown for Now!

Endangered Animals Documentary

As we enter our new Science Unit: Human Activity on Habitats and Communities I want you to reflect on the Documentary – "Animal Life in Action – Endangered and Extinct Animals."

It is IMPORTANT you try and remember a few endangered animals because you will be writing about them in the future and at the zoo field trip you may want to investigate more about the Endangered Animals if they are at the Metro Toronto Zoo.

Just in case you forgot here are a few Endangered Species the video talked about:

Fractions to Percentage Review

For the students too shy to ask questions in class, here's a quick review about how to convert Fractions into Percentage.

1) Take lollipops again for an example of a Fraction

Click on picture for an example of a Fraction

2) There are 3 Red Lollipops out of 9 Lollipops in TOTAL. What chance in percentage I would pick a Red Lollipop out of the bag?

Step 1:
Divide the Numerator with the Denominator
- Use the online calculator if you need to

3 ÷ 9 = ____

Step 2:
Multiply Step 1s answer by 100
- the reason for this is to find the answer out of 100 percent

0.3 x 100 = ___

Step 3:
Your answer!
- make sure you write the % sign or your answer will still be wrong!

33%

Step 4:
The sentence
“There is a 33% chance I would pick a Red Lollipop out of the bag”

That's all for now, see you next time and thanks for dropping by.

Probability Review

Today our class learned a NEW concept! The root word in this concept is PROBABLE, if you thought it was PROBABILITY then you are correct. Just in case you forgot this should help you out. Today we played "WHAT'S THE CHANCE?" game with picking coloured lollipops out of the bag.

This Probability question is about a "group" of lollipops.
There are 10 lollipops in TOTAL
How would you input the data of lollipops into a fraction from the information provided below???

5 Red Lollipops

3 Blue Lollipops

2 Purple Lollipops

If you were to convert the fractions of the coloured lollipops into a probability sentence, it would sound like this:

There are 5 Red Lollipops out of 10 Lollipops in total
There are 3 Blue Lollipops out of 10 Lollipops in total
There are 2 Purple Lollipops out of 10 Lollipops in total

If you still do not understand, see me in class. Next we will learn how to convert these probabilty fractions into a PERCENTAGE.
